India is renowned for several cuisines, especially desserts as they hold a special place in our hearts. We do not just have a sweet tooth, but sugar is an indispensable commodity in Indian households as well. But do you know that it comes in other variants besides the regular granular form? On top of that, these variants are used in different industries as they serve various purposes there.
An abundance of sugarcane crops and cultivation is one of the reasons why India has a great number of sugar exporter. They manufacture and process this raw material which becomes another type of sugar variant. This blog categorises sugar into various kinds that industries are making the most of.
1. Brown Sugar
It is almost like normal sucrose sugar, which is brown. The presence of molasses gives this sugar its colour. It is usually unrefined or partially refined but has several health benefits. It is a great companion in weight loss journeys and is good for digestion as well. Some sugar manufacturers deliberately add molasses to refined sugar and sell it as commercial brown sugar.
2. Liquid Sugar
When white granulated regular sugar is diluted in the water, it's called Liquid Sugar. Most of the time, refined sugarcane juice or beet sugar is used for the same purpose. You will come across sectors where it is used for fermentation and sugar coating. It is also inverted to prevent it from the process of crystallisation. It is also popular as a syrup across the globe.
3. Molasses
When sugarcane or beet juice is refined into sugar, the obtained by-product is molasses. Even the largest sugar mill in India will produce molasses with its sugar manufacturing process. It is unavoidable. You may not know but molasses is rich in iron and calcium along with magnesium and potassium as well as Vitamin B6. It is also used in distillation of rum and as an additive in mortar.
4. Powdered Sugar
This finely ground sugar is used at confectionaries to bake and make lip-smacking delights. It is majorly used in industrial food production as it needs sugar that dissolves quickly. You must have seen sweet frosting or icing on the cake, which is made of powdered sugar only. It happens to have its own variants like caster sugar and snow sugar.
5. Raw Sugar
It is the natural brown sugar with retained molasses. It is used for food & drink preparation as well as for skin care. Because it is rich in Alpha Hydroxy Acids or AHAs, it is also used for exfoliating the skin. You will find many bath soaps and body scrubs along with lip scrubs made of AHAs. There are plenty of sugar exporters in India who exclusively manufacture this variant with the intent of global selling.
6. Refined Sugar
Also renowned as granulated sugar, regular sugar, table sugar, and white sugar. After undergoing the refining process, you will get pure sucrose. You will find no trace of molasses in it. With purity that surpasses the 99% mark, refined sugar lacks nutrients like its brown variant. Because it goes through so many refining processes, the essential minerals and nutrients get filtered as well.
7. Sugar Alcohol
It has white solids that are soluble in the water. They are then used as thickening & sweetening agents in the food industry. You will also be able to see that it is used as a food additive. The presence of xylitol in it prevents tooth decay as well. It has less to no effect on the blood sugar levels of humans. Hence, it is preferred as a sweetener by diabetic people and those following a low-carb diet.
Conclusion
We can't say it with 100% surety as to which company produces which type of sugar. However, the largest sugar mill in India might be involved in the production of all these variants. You just have to be curious enough to find it all out.
